The 987-hectare nature reserve "Saline di Trapani e Paceco" is located, as the name suggests, between Trapani and Paceco in western Sicily. It was established in 1995 to protect the remarkable Mediterranean flora and fauna, as well as the biodiversity in the seawater salt pans, such as the brine shrimp Artemia, which can only survive in salty waters. Flamingos have also settled here.

The "Museo del Sale" in an old salt mill is especially recommended. The museum tells the story about the extraction of salt in the region, which could be proved over the past three thousand years.
