Topography

Today Siracusa has ca. 120.000 inhabitants and is probably the most historic town in Sicily. Historically seen it once was the most important town on the island.

Wikipedia writes:

The town of Syracus (in Italian Siracusa, in Sicilian Saraùsa, in Latin Syracusae) is situated at the Eastern coast of the Italian region Sicily and is the capital of the department Syrakus. In the ancient world Siracusa was the biggest and mightiest town in Sicily and its cultural centre for centuries. Marcus Tullius Cicero describes it as “the biggest and most beautiful town of all Greek towns”.

In 2005 Siracusa was declared to World Culture Heritage together with the Nekropolis of Pantalica. In explanation it was said,

that the places and edifices of the ensemble Siracusa/Pantalica present a unique collection of remarkable examples of  the Mediterranean culture at the same place for centuries. By its remarkable cultural variety the ensemble Siracusa/Pantalica gives an extraordinary evidence of the development of civilization during more than three millenniums. The group of edifices and archaeological sites in Siracusa (from the centre of Ortigia to the remains spread out all over the city area) is the best example for an outstanding architectural work covering different cultural aspects  (Greek, Roman, Baroque). The antique Siracusa was directly connected with events, ideas and literature of a brilliant and worldwide importance.“

Ortigia is the name of a small island at the Eastern coast of Sicily. It is the historic centre of Siracusa separated from the mainland just by a small passage of some metres. It covers an area of almost one square metre and has ca. 4.500 inhabitants and two ports.
